Nitrocefin is a highly activated, chromogenic cephalosporin derivative. It functions as a chromogenic β-lactamase substrate. Nitrocefin undergoes a distinct color change from yellow to red when the amide bond in its β-lactam ring is hydrolyzed by β-lactamase. It is used in competitive inhibition studies during the development of β-lactamase-resistant antibiotics.
